Vicks VapoRub is a topical cough over-the-counter medicine with powerful Vicks vapors. It works quickly to relieve coughs so you can breathe easier. Vicks VapoRub is specially formulated with three active cough suppressants: menthol, camphor, and eucalyptus oil.
Simply rub a thick layer of the medicated ointment on your chest and throat to temporarily relieve cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation associated with the common cold.
It can also be used as a topical analgesic to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains in your muscles and joints.
Like all medicines, Vicks VapoRub can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Redness or irritation of the skin, irritation of the eyes (by inhalation) or allergic reactions can occur. These are usually mild and occur rarely.
Burns at application site may occur but the frequency is not known.

Do not use Vicks VapoRub:
- if you are allergic to any of the actives or other ingredients (see patient information leaflet)
- on children under 2 years
- as an inhalation for children under 12 years
- on broken skin, wounds or mucous membranes
- swallow or apply directly onto the nostrils, eyes, mouth or face
Do not bandage tightly.
Do not use with heat wrap.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you:
- have a history of airway disease or asthma
- you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby
