Utrogestan is a micronised progesterone. It is plant based and biologically identical to progesterone, which is a hormone that naturally occurs within the female reproductive system. When used in combination with an oestrogen, it can reduce the symptoms of the menopause. This combination of Utrogestan and oestrogen belongs to a group of medicines called hormone replacement therapy (HRT). As you get near to the menopause, the amount of oestrogen and progesterone in your body goes down. HRT replaces these hormones and helps reduce the symptoms of the menopause. If your HRT contains only oestrogen the lining of the womb could build up, which can cause problems. By taking Utrogestan as well, this makes you shed the womb lining, and so prevents these problems from happening. You might get some bleeding at the end of each month, rather like a period.
