Tranexamic Acid is a type of medication known as an antifibrinolytic drug, which are used to stop or reduce unwanted bleeding. When you bleed, the body produces blood clots which stop and control the bleeding. In some people, these clots break down which increases the amount of bleeding. Tranexamic acid works by stopping the breakdown of blood clots, preventing excessive bleeding in the process. This medication can be used to help women who are suffering from heavy periods.
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Possible side effects include:
- Eyesight changes
- Blood clots in the eye
- Itchy, red or swollen skin
- Feeling/being sick
- Diarrhoea
- Allergic reaction
