Nurofen Plus is a strong painkiller available over the counter. The active ingredients in Nurofen Plus are Ibuprofen and Codeine phosphate.
Ibuprofen belongs to a group of medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs provide relief by changing the body’s response to pain, swelling, and high temperature.
Codeine belongs to a group of medicines called opioid analgesics which act to relieve pain. It can be used on its own or in combination with other pain killers such as paracetamol.
Like all medicines, Nurofen Plus can cause side effects.
Side effects may include:
- indigestion, heartburn, nausea
- stomach pain or other abnormal stomach symptoms
- rashes, itching
- headache
- constipation or diarrhoea
If you experience these or any other side effects stop taking this medicine and speak to one of our pharmacists or GP.
STOP TAKING the medicine and seek immediate medical help if you develop:
- signs of intestinal bleeding such as: bright red faeces (stools/motions), black tarry stools, vomiting blood or dark particles that look like coffee grounds
- signs of rare but serious allergic reaction such as severe skin rashes, peeling, flaking or blistering skin, facial swelling, unexplained wheezing, shortness of breath, easy bruising
- a severe skin reaction known as DRESS syndrome can occur. Symptoms of DRESS include: skin rash, fever, swelling of lymph nodes and an increase of eosinophils (a type of white blood cells)
- A red, scaly widespread rash with bumps under the skin and blisters mainly localised on the skin folds, trunk, and upper extremities accompanied by fever at the initiation of treatment
Codeine taken long term can cause addiction. Do not take this medicine for longer than 3 days. If symptoms persist please talk to you pharmacist or GP for advice.
Keep out of sight and reach of children.
