Lovima was one of the first contraceptive pills available for purchase without a prescription. Containing the active ingredient 75 mcg of desogestrel, it falls under the category of progestogen-only pills (POPs). This makes it a viable option for individuals unable to tolerate pills containing estrogen. Certain demographics, such as women who are overweight or those who smoke and are 35 years or older, may find combined pills with estrogen unsuitable. Lovima is also safe for use during breastfeeding.
When used correctly, progestogen-only pills have an efficacy rate exceeding 99%. However, in real life terms the effectiveness is estimated at around 91%. Administered once daily, Lovima eliminates the need to take breaks between packs. Its key component desogestrel mimics the hormone progesterone synthetically. This works by halting ovulation and thickening cervical mucus to stop sperm travelling towards the egg.
Due to its mechanism of action, irregular vaginal bleeding may occur while using Lovima. This bleeding can range from minimal spotting to heavier flows, with some individuals experiencing no bleeding at all. Over time, the bleeding tends to reduce or stop altogether. If bleeding persists excessively or causes concern, seeking medical advice from a doctor or pharmacist is advisable.
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
If you experience these or any other side effects while taking this medicine seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist, especially if they’re persistent or severe.
Possible side effects can include:
- mood changes
- reduced sex drive
- breast pain
- nausea
- headache
- irregular or no periods
Research indicates that the use of combined pills containing estrogen slightly raises the likelihood of breast cancer development. While investigations into progestogen-only pills, like Lovima, and their potential impact on breast cancer risk are ongoing, the evidence remains less conclusive compared to combined pills. For information on identifying potential breast cancer signs, please consult the NHS guide on breast self-examination here.
There have been isolated reports of ectopic pregnancies among individuals using this medicine. It’s essential to remain vigilant for symptoms of ectopic pregnancy, such as severe lower abdominal pain, while using this medication. Additional details on ectopic pregnancy symptoms can be found on the NHS website here.
