Loratadine is an antihistamine which helps to reduce allergic symptoms by preventing the effects of a substance called histamine, which is produced in the body. It helps relieve the symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis, for example, hay fever, such as sneezing, runny or itchy nose and burning or itchy eyes. It can also be used to treat skin allergies including hives.
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The most commonly reported side effects in adults and children over 12 years are:
- drowsiness
- headache
- increased appetite
- difficulty sleeping
The most commonly reported side effects in children aged from 6 to 12 years are:
- headache
- nervousness
- tiredness
Serious side effects which have been rarely reported are difficulty in breathing, and swelling of the face, neck, tongue or throat. If any of these side effects occur, stop taking the tablets and contact your doctor.
If any of these side effects get serious, or you get side effects not listed above, please speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
You should speak to your doctor before taking Loratadine if you have liver disease.
If you are scheduled to have any allergy or skin tests, you should not take these tablets for two days before.
You should make sure to mention if you are taking any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
