Estradiol is a type of female sex hormone called estrogen and is used in a treatment known as local vaginal hormone replacement therapy (HRT). This therapy relieves vaginal dryness and irritation associated with menopause. Vaginal dryness occurs during menopause due to a decrease in estrogen levels. Estradiol works by replenishing the lost estrogen.
