Doxycycline can be used to prevent malaria from developing, by killing the parasite in the bloodstream.
It is important to complete the full dose of doxycycline once you have returned home.
In addition to taking antimalarial tablets, it is important to also follow mosquito bite avoidance measures. Combining both of these measures will provide you with the most effective protection from malaria.
You can avoid mosquito bites by:
- Using good quality insect repellents, containing 50% DEET (adults) or IR3535 (children)
- Covering arms and legs
- Using a mosquito net
