Causes

The exact cause of acid reflux is not always known, but some of the possible causes include:

Weak cardiac sphincter: The cardiac sphincter is a ring of muscle that separates the oesophagus from the stomach. If this muscle is weak, it can allow stomach acid to back up into the oesophagus.
Hiatal hernia: A hiatal hernia is a condition in which part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen. This can increase the risk of acid reflux.
Overeating: Overeating can put pressure on the stomach, which can increase the risk of acid reflux.
Eating fatty or spicy foods: Fatty and spicy foods can irritate the lining of the oesophagus, which can increase the risk of acid reflux.
Drinking alcohol: Alcohol can relax the cardiac sphincter, which can increase the risk of acid reflux.
Smoking: Smoking can irritate the lining of the oesophagus, which can increase the risk of acid reflux.
Certain medications: Certain medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, can increase the risk of acid reflux.
