FAQs
When is the best time to start using Zovirax?
Start Zovirax at the very first sign of a cold sore - the tingling, itching, or burning sensation before any visible sore appears. Early treatment gives the best results and may even prevent the blister from fully developing.
How does Zovirax work against cold sores?
Aciclovir is an antiviral that stops the herpes simplex virus from multiplying. It's converted to an active form inside infected cells, where it blocks viral DNA production and prevents the virus from spreading.
Can Zovirax cure cold sores permanently?
No, Zovirax treats active cold sores but cannot cure the underlying herpes virus, which remains dormant in the body between outbreaks. It helps heal cold sores faster and may reduce the severity of outbreaks.
Why do I need to apply Zovirax 5 times a day?
Frequent application maintains effective antiviral levels at the infection site. The 4-hourly interval (with overnight break) is based on clinical studies showing this gives optimal results against the virus.
Can I use Zovirax for genital herpes?
No, Zovirax Cold Sore Cream is specifically for cold sores on the lips and face. For genital herpes, oral antiviral tablets are typically prescribed - consult your doctor for appropriate treatment.
