Description
How it works
The Wegovy pill contains the same molecule (semaglutide) and works through the same mechanism as the Wegovy injection: it mimics the natural gut hormone GLP-1. Activating GLP-1 receptors in the gut and brain helps the body regulate appetite, fullness and blood sugar. People in clinical trials reported:
-
Less hunger and fewer food cravings
-
Feeling full sooner and staying full for longer
-
Easier portion control around structured meals
-
Steadier energy between meals
The 25 mg tablet dose is significantly higher than the 14 mg tablet used in Rybelsus — Novo Nordisk's existing oral semaglutide product for type 2 diabetes — because oral absorption of semaglutide is relatively low compared to injection. The higher tablet dose is what makes the weight-management indication possible.
Who it may be suitable for
Eligibility will only be confirmed for the UK once the MHRA issues a licence and any NICE guidance is published. Based on the FDA-approved US label and standard UK GLP-1 prescribing patterns, the Wegovy pill is being developed for:
-
Adults with a BMI of 30 or above (obesity), or
-
Adults with a BMI of 27 or above who also have at least one weight-related health condition (such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or obstructive sleep apnoea)
The Wegovy pill is intended for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity — not as a standalone treatment.
Side Effects
Side effects in OASIS-4 were consistent with the broader semaglutide profile and were predominantly gastrointestinal, most noticeable during dose increases:
-
Nausea
-
Vomiting
-
Diarrhoea
-
Constipation
-
Indigestion or reflux
-
Reduced appetite (also the intended effect)
-
Headache or fatigue, particularly in the early weeks
For most people, these symptoms improved as the dose stabilised.
Comfort tips
-
Eat smaller, slower meals and stop at comfortable fullness
-
Prioritise lean protein, fibre and fluids; keep very fatty or spicy foods modest
-
Avoid lying flat immediately after eating if you're prone to reflux
-
Gentle walks can help with bloating
Additional Info
The Wegovy pill carries a boxed warning regarding the risk of thyroid C-cell tumours, based on findings in animal studies. This is a class warning shared with all GLP-1 medicines, including the Wegovy injection, Ozempic and Mounjaro, and has not been confirmed in humans — but the medicine is not recommended for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2. Other class precautions include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and the potential for low blood sugar when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas. UK-specific precautions will be confirmed in the MHRA-approved Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC) once the medicine is licensed here.
FAQs
Is the Wegovy pill available on the NHS?
No — it isn't yet available privately or on the NHS, because it isn't MHRA-licensed in the UK for weight management. Even once a licence is granted, NHS access would require a separate appraisal by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which typically takes several months after MHRA approval.
When will the Wegovy pill be available in the UK?
Novo Nordisk submitted oral semaglutide 25 mg to the MHRA and EMA in the second half of 2025. A UK regulatory decision is expected later in 2026. If approved on that timeline, private UK prescribing could begin in late 2026 or early 2027. NHS availability would come later, depending on NICE appraisal.
Can I buy it online now?
No. The Wegovy pill is not legally available in the UK for weight management. Any UK-based website or social media account claiming to sell it is doing so unlawfully, and the product cannot be guaranteed to be genuine. Importing prescription medicines from the US for personal weight management is also not a safe or legal route.
Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?
Both are oral semaglutide tablets made by Novo Nordisk, but they are different products with different doses and different licensed uses. Rybelsus (3 mg, 7 mg or 14 mg) is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes only. The Wegovy pill is a higher 25 mg dose specifically developed and tested for weight management — and is currently under MHRA review for that purpose. Patients on Rybelsus for diabetes do sometimes lose modest amounts of weight, but it is not licensed for that indication.
How does the Wegovy pill compare to the Wegovy injection?
They contain the same active ingredient (semaglutide). In trials, the pill produced around 13.6% average weight loss in the real-world analysis, compared with around 15% for the 2.4 mg injection in its pivotal STEP-1 trial. The newer 7.2 mg Wegovy injection (MHRA-approved in January 2026) showed even higher weight loss. The pill's main practical difference is delivery: a once-daily tablet rather than a once-weekly injection — but it must be taken on an empty stomach with strict fasted-morning rules.
Why does it have to be taken on an empty stomach?
Semaglutide is a peptide molecule that's broken down rapidly when it meets food in the stomach. Taking it on an empty stomach with a small amount of plain water — and waiting 30 minutes before eating — gives the medicine the best chance of being absorbed. The newer Foundayo (orforglipron) tablet, which is a small-molecule rather than a peptide, doesn't have this restriction and can be taken any time of day.
Can I switch from the Wegovy injection to the Wegovy pill?
Once the pill is licensed in the UK, switching would be a clinical decision made with your prescriber based on factors like tolerability, lifestyle preferences, and how you've responded to the injection. Until the pill is licensed in the UK, switching isn't available as an option.
Can I put my name on a waiting list?
We don't keep waiting lists for medicines that aren't yet UK-licensed. The most reliable way to stay informed is to subscribe to our newsletter, where we publish updates as MHRA decisions are made. In the meantime, our weight loss service offers consultations for Wegovy injection and Mounjaro.
What happens if I stop taking the Wegovy pill?
Evidence across the GLP-1 class consistently shows that stopping treatment leads to some weight regain over time, particularly without sustained changes to diet and activity. Long-term maintenance studies for oral semaglutide are ongoing.
Who makes it?
Oral semaglutide 25 mg is developed and manufactured by Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company behind the Wegovy injection, Ozempic, Rybelsus and Saxenda.
