Description
Pepto-Bismol contains bismuth subsalicylate, a unique compound that provides relief from multiple digestive symptoms including heartburn, indigestion, nausea, upset stomach, and diarrhoea. When taken, bismuth subsalicylate breaks down in the gut into two active components: bismuth, which has a protective coating action on the stomach lining and antibacterial effects, and salicylic acid (related to aspirin), which has anti-inflammatory properties. The bismuth component also has direct bactericidal effects against enterotoxigenic E. coli (a common cause of traveller's diarrhoea) and Helicobacter pylori (the bacterium associated with stomach ulcers). This multi-action formula makes Pepto-Bismol effective for a range of minor digestive complaints. The distinctive pink colour and pleasant taste have made it a trusted remedy for over a century.
Side Effects
Common and harmless: Black tongue and/or black stools - this is a normal, harmless reaction between bismuth and trace amounts of sulphur in saliva and the digestive tract. It is temporary and will resolve when you stop taking the product.
Other possible effects: Nausea (may occur in some people, though it often helps nausea), constipation with prolonged use, ringing in the ears (tinnitus) - this may indicate excessive salicylate intake, stop taking and seek advice. If you experience ringing in the ears, allergic reactions, or any concerning symptoms, stop taking Pepto-Bismol and consult a healthcare professional.

Additional Info
CRITICAL - Not for under 16s: Contains salicylate, which is related to aspirin. There is a risk of Reye's syndrome - a rare but serious condition - if salicylates are given to children and teenagers with viral infections. Do not use if you are allergic to aspirin or other salicylates, have an active stomach ulcer or bleeding disorder, or are taking blood-thinning medications (warfarin, heparin). Pregnancy warning: Avoid after 20 weeks of pregnancy as salicylates may affect the baby's heart and reduce blood flow. Not recommended while breastfeeding as salicylates pass into breast milk. Contains sodium and benzoic acid (E210). Also contains amaranth colouring (E123) which may cause allergic reactions.
Directions
Adults and young people aged 16 years and over: Take 30ml (approximately 525mg bismuth subsalicylate) every 30 minutes to 1 hour as needed. Maximum: 8 doses (240ml) in 24 hours. Shake the bottle well before use. Use the measuring cup provided for accurate dosing.
Do not use for more than 2 days (48 hours) without consulting a doctor. Drink plenty of clear fluids to help replace those lost during digestive upset.
FAQs
Why did my tongue and stools turn black?
This is completely normal and harmless! Bismuth reacts with tiny amounts of sulphur in your saliva and digestive system to form bismuth sulphide, which is black in colour. This is not blood and not a cause for concern. The discoloration is temporary and will clear up within a few days of stopping the product.
Why can't children under 16 take Pepto-Bismol?
Pepto-Bismol contains bismuth subsalicylate, which releases salicylate (related to aspirin) in the body. Giving aspirin or salicylates to children and teenagers with viral infections has been linked to Reye's syndrome - a rare but potentially fatal condition affecting the brain and liver. For safety, all salicylate-containing products are avoided in under-16s.
Can I take Pepto-Bismol with other medicines?
Be cautious with other medicines. Don't use with: aspirin or other pain relievers (increases salicylate intake), blood thinners like warfarin, diabetes medications (salicylates can affect blood sugar), or tetracycline antibiotics (bismuth reduces absorption). Ask your pharmacist about specific interactions.
Is Pepto-Bismol good for traveller's diarrhoea?
Yes, Pepto-Bismol can be helpful for traveller's diarrhoea. The bismuth component has antibacterial effects against E. coli, a common cause of traveller's diarrhoea. It can be used for prevention (during travel to high-risk areas) or treatment of mild symptoms. However, if you develop severe symptoms, bloody diarrhoea, or high fever, seek medical attention.
