Description
Buscopan IBS Relief contains hyoscine butylbromide, an anticholinergic antispasmodic medicine specifically designed to relieve abdominal cramps, pain, and discomfort associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The active ingredient works by relaxing the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract through a dual mechanism: ganglion-blocking action and antimuscarinic (anticholinergic) effects. This helps to reduce painful spasms in the bowel that cause the characteristic cramping symptoms of IBS. Unlike some antispasmodics, hyoscine butylbromide has very low systemic absorption (only about 8% when taken orally), which means it primarily acts locally in the gut with minimal effects on other parts of the body. Each tablet contains 10mg of hyoscine butylbromide and is suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over who have been medically diagnosed with IBS.
Side Effects
Uncommon (affecting fewer than 1 in 100 people): Increased heart rate (tachycardia), dry mouth.
Rare (affecting fewer than 1 in 1,000 people): Difficulty passing urine (urinary retention), particularly in susceptible individuals.
Very rare (affecting fewer than 1 in 10,000 people): Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) including potentially fatal anaphylactic shock, skin reactions, other hypersensitivity reactions.
Also reported: Visual accommodation disturbances (temporary blurred vision or difficulty focusing), dizziness. If you experience any severe symptoms or allergic reactions, stop taking the medicine and seek medical attention immediately.

FAQs
How long does Buscopan take to work?
Buscopan typically starts to relieve cramps and spasms within 15-30 minutes of taking the tablet. However, individual response times may vary. If you don't experience relief within this time, you may take a second tablet, but do not exceed the maximum daily dose.
Can I take Buscopan every day?
Buscopan IBS Relief should not be used continuously for more than 2 weeks without consulting a doctor. It is designed for short-term relief of IBS symptoms. If you need regular treatment, speak to your doctor about long-term management options.
Can I take Buscopan with other medicines?
Buscopan may interact with some medicines. Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you are taking: other anticholinergic medicines (effects may be enhanced), metoclopramide or domperidone (anti-sickness medicines - effects may be reduced), tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, quinidine, amantadine, or disopyramide. Always check with a healthcare professional before combining medicines.
What's the difference between Buscopan and Buscopan IBS Relief?
Both contain the same active ingredient (hyoscine butylbromide 10mg). Buscopan IBS Relief is specifically licensed for treating IBS symptoms in those with a medical diagnosis, while regular Buscopan is for general abdominal cramps and spasms. The dosing instructions may differ slightly.
